Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Peel and slice the potatoes into thin, even rounds for consistent cooking. Finely chop the onion. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the Beef and Onions: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned but not overcooked. Season with salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder. Drain any excess fat.
- Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup with milk or cream. Stir until smooth to create a creamy binder for the casserole.
- Assemble the Casserole: Grease a baking dish. Layer half the sliced potatoes, then spread half the beef mixture evenly over them. Pour half the soup mixture over the beef, then sprinkle with a portion of shredded cheese. Repeat the layers, ending with a generous cheese topping.
- Bake Until Golden: Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
