Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: Cut cold unsalted butter into the all-purpose flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in sour cream and vanilla extract gently until dough holds together but remains slightly crumbly. Chill the dough for at least 1 hour to firm up the butter for flaky layers.
- Make the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and thinly slice tart apples. Toss slices with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until evenly coated.
- Roll Out the Dough and Assemble: Roll chilled dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Spread apple filling evenly down the center third of the dough. Fold sides over the filling, then flatten and seal edges by pinching together carefully.
- Shape and Bake: Transfer assembled kringle to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush top with egg wash for a golden finish. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and crisp.
- Prepare and Drizzle Vanilla Glaze: While kringle cools, mix powdered sugar with vanilla extract and enough milk to create a smooth pouring consistency. Drizzle over kringle for a sweet, glossy finish.
