Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup cold butter (or coconut oil for vegan variant), cut into small pieces
- 3/4 cup milk or buttermilk (use plant-based milk for vegan option)
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend), baking powder, brown sugar, and salt. Mix thoroughly until well incorporated.
- Cut in the Butter: Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingertips, work the cold butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. This will help create flaky layers in your scones.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk or buttermilk, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth and fragrant.
- Form the Dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Gently stir the mixture just until combined, being careful not to overmix to avoid tough scones.
- Shape and Cut: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick. Using a sharp knife or bench scraper, cut the dough into 8 equal wedges.
- Bake Until Golden: Place the scone wedges on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-18 minutes or until the scones are golden brown and fragrant.
Notes
- Keep all ingredients cold, especially the butter, for the best flaky scones.
- Do not overmix the dough to maintain a tender crumb.
- Use fresh baking powder for optimal rise and light texture.
- For a glossy finish and extra sweetness, brush the tops with maple syrup immediately after baking.
- The dough can be refrigerated overnight to develop flavor and simplify morning preparation.
