Ingredients
Scale
Brownie Base
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Caramel Layer
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- Pinch of salt (optional, for salted caramel variation)
Chocolate Topping
- 7 oz dark chocolate, chopped
- Optional garnishes: flaky sea salt, chopped nuts, shredded coconut, powdered sugar, fresh berries
Instructions
- Prepare the Brownie Base: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking pan with parchment paper. In a bowl, combine melted butter, sugar, cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, vanilla extract, and salt, mixing until smooth and fudgy. Spread the batter evenly in the pan and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes until just set but still moist inside. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
- Make the Caramel Layer: While the brownie base cools, melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Whisk in sweetened condensed milk and brown sugar, cooking gently until the mixture thickens and turns golden, about 8-10 minutes. Pour this caramel evenly over the cooled brownie base and let it cool completely to set.
- Melt and Pour the Chocolate: Break the dark chocolate into chunks and gently melt it using a double boiler or microwave in short 20-second bursts, stirring frequently to avoid burning. Pour the melted chocolate over the set caramel layer, spreading evenly with a spatula to cover the surface completely.
- Chill and Slice: Refrigerate the assembled brownies for at least two hours to allow the caramel and chocolate layers to firm up. For clean cuts, warm a sharp knife in hot water and dry it, then slice the brownies into squares, wiping the knife between cuts.
Notes
- Measure ingredients carefully for best texture.
- Use high-quality dark chocolate for a smooth, rich topping.
- Avoid overbaking the brownie base to maintain fudginess.
- Allow each layer to fully cool and set before adding the next to prevent mixing.
- Warm and dry the knife before slicing for clean edges.
- Customize by adding nuts, sea salt, or using white chocolate for the topping.
