Ingredients
Scale
Salisbury Steak Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- 4 cups peeled and quartered potatoes
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
Mushroom & Onion Gravy
- 8 oz cremini or white button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium sweet onion, diced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour or cornstarch
- 2 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the garlic mashed potatoes: Boil peeled and quartered potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and let potatoes steam for a few minutes to dry off excess moisture. Mash with minced garlic, butter, heavy cream, salt, and pepper until creamy and smooth.
- Form and season the Salisbury steak patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and onion powder. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat, then shape into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
- Brown the patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crusty. Remove and set aside.
- Sauté mushrooms and onions: In the same skillet, melt butter and cook sliced mushrooms and diced onions over medium-low heat until caramelized and tender, about 8-10 minutes.
- Make the mushroom and onion gravy: Sprinkle flour or cornstarch over the mushroom and onion mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring continuously until the gravy thickens and becomes smooth.
- Simmer patties in the gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes to cook through and meld flavors.
- Serve with garlic mashed potatoes: Plate the Salisbury steaks over a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and generously spoon mushroom and onion gravy on top. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley for brightness and color.
Notes
- Don’t overwork the meat when mixing to keep patties tender and juicy.
- Use rich homemade or low-sodium beef broth to elevate gravy flavor.
- Let potatoes steam dry after boiling for smoother mashed potatoes.
- Caramelize onions slowly over low heat for natural sweetness in the gravy.
- Add broth gradually when making gravy to control thickness and avoid lumps.
