Ingredients
Scale
Proteins & Beans
- 1 lb lean ground turkey
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
Vegetables
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into bite-sized cubes
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Liquids
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
Spices & Oils
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prep Your Ingredients: Dice the sweet potatoes into bite-sized cubes, finely chop the onion and garlic, and gather all spices and canned goods to have everything ready for a smooth cooking process.
- Brown the Turkey: Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the ground turkey and cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Sauté Aromatics: Add chopped onion and garlic to the pot with the turkey. Sauté until onions become translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add Spices and Sweet Potatoes: Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper over the meat and onions. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Then add the diced sweet potatoes and mix to combine flavors.
- Pour in Liquids and Beans: Add the diced tomatoes, black beans, and broth to the pot. Stir thoroughly and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Simmer Until Tender: Reduce heat to low. Cover the pot and let the chili simmer gently for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sweet potatoes are tender and flavors are well blended.
- Final Taste and Adjustments: Taste the chili and adjust salt, pepper, or spices as desired before serving hot.
Notes
- Use fresh chili powder and cumin for maximum flavor.
- Do not overcook sweet potatoes to maintain a pleasant texture.
- Properly brown the ground turkey for a deeper flavor base.
- Simmer chili slowly to blend flavors thoroughly.
- Adjust thickness by adding more broth or simmering uncovered to reduce.
