Ingredients
Scale
Beef Patties
- 1 lb Ground Beef (80/20 fat ratio)
- Salt, to taste
- Black Pepper, to taste
- 1–2 tbsp Olive Oil or Butter (for cooking)
- 4 slices Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Fresh Toppings
- 2 cups Fresh Lettuce, chopped
- 1 medium Tomato, sliced
- ¼ Red Onion, thinly sliced
- 4–6 Dill Pickles, sliced
Sauce
- Burger Sauce or Mayo-based sauce, as needed
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Patties: Divide the ground beef into four evenly sized balls (about 4 ounces each). Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy pan over medium-high heat and add olive oil or butter. Place one beef ball onto the hot skillet and immediately press down firmly with a spatula or burger press to form a thin patty. Cook for 2-3 minutes until edges are crispy and browned, then flip.
- Add Cheese and Finish Cooking: Place a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on each flipped patty. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and the patty is cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove patties from skillet.
- Prepare Fresh Toppings: While patties cook, chop the lettuce, slice the tomatoes, red onions, and dill pickles. These fresh veggies add brightness and crunch to balance the rich patties.
- Assemble the Smash Burger Bowl: Start with a layer of lettuce in each serving bowl. Add the cheesy smashed patties on top, then arrange tomato slices, onion rings, and pickle slices around. Drizzle generously with your favorite burger sauce or mayo-based dressing. Optionally, sprinkle extra salt, pepper, or smoked paprika for flavor enhancement.
Notes
- Use a heavy skillet, ideally cast iron, for best crust development.
- Handle the ground beef gently when forming balls to keep patties tender.
- Press firmly but avoid overcooking the patties.
- Use a high smoke point oil like canola or avocado oil for crisp edges without burning.
- Prep all fresh toppings ahead to speed up assembly.
- Store leftovers separately to prevent sogginess.
- Reheat patties in a hot skillet or under the broiler for best texture.
- Customize with jalapeños for spice, or substitute patties for vegetarian versions.
